WHO IS YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE?

So, you’re a small business owner and you want to conquer social media. But before you start posting memes or cat videos, you need to figure out who you’re actually talking to. Let’s face it: shouting into the void is so 2010. Here’s how to find your people (and maybe even get them to like you).
Step 1: Set Your Goals (Because Winging It Is Not a Strategy)
Before you do anything, ask yourself: Why are you on social media? Is it to boost brand awareness, get more sales, or just prove to your cousin that your business is cooler than his? Get specific. Setting clear goals will keep you from spiraling into the endless pit of “likes” and “follows” that may or may not matter to your bottom line.
Step 2: Become a Digital Detective
Now, it’s time to channel your inner Sherlock. Here’s how you can sleuth out your audience:
Analyze Your Current Customers: Who’s already buying from you? Check your sales records, ask them directly, or just lurk on their social profiles (in a totally non-creepy way.
Use Analytics: Google Analytics and social media insights are your new best friends. They’ll tell you who’s visiting your website and engaging with your posts—age, gender, location, and even what they had for breakfast (okay, maybe not that last one).
Spy on Your Competitors: Who’s liking, commenting, and sharing their stuff? If your competitors are doing something right, shamelessly borrow their tactics.
Conduct Surveys: Yes, you can actually ask your customers what they want. Wild, right? Use polls, DMs, or even a carrier pigeon if you must.
Step 3: Pick the Right Platform (Hint: Not Everyone’s on TikTok)
Don’t waste your time on every platform just because “everyone’s doing it.” Figure out where your audience hangs out. Are they Instagram addicts, Facebook fanatics, or LinkedIn lurkers? Focus your energy there and ignore the rest (your sanity will thank you).
Step 4: Create Content That Doesn’t Suck
Now that you know your audience, talk to them like actual humans. Share stories, behind-the-scenes moments, or even your latest business fail (people love that stuff). Just don’t sell, sell, sell—unless you want to be ignored faster than a Terms & Conditions pop-up.
Use humor, be authentic, and don’t be afraid to show some personality.
Respond to comments and messages like you’re talking to a friend, not a robot.
Mix up your content: videos, photos, polls, and the occasional meme (bonus points if it’s actually funny).
Step 5: Listen, Learn, and Adapt
Social media is not a “set it and forget it” kind of deal. Use analytics to see what’s working (and what’s flopping), listen to feedback, and tweak your approach. If your audience suddenly loves llamas, maybe it’s time for a llama-themed post. Stay flexible, stay fun, and remember: nobody likes a try-hard.
Step 6: Keep the Conversation Going
Again, don’t just post and ghost. Respond to comments, answer questions, and jump into conversations. The more you engage, the more your audience will tell you—sometimes without even realizing it—what they love (and what makes them hit “unfollow” faster than you can say “algorithm”)
Congratulations! You’re now ready to identify (and actually relate to) your social media audience. Go forth and conquer—just don’t forget to have a little fun along the way.
